The main sound source for this work is a pump organ that I was recording sketches of for a film in the script phase. Reed timbre lends itself very well to spectral editing and sculpting, and there are a lot of unpredictable artifacts to deal with from the creaks of the wood, the mechanism, the pump. While they’re normally not desirable, in this case they were used to bring a humanised and breathing psychoacoustic element to a sound editing technique that often resists the warm and natural.
The humanity of the source material helps to move the work across the different axes of the framework of place, person, and their opposites – through the titular house and non-house.
